I wanted some text engraved on a part of a case for one project of mine. I found out DraftSight is an awesome and free 3d CAD tool that allows you to export .dwg files most vendors accept for laser cutting. One thing I couldn’t get it to do was to ‘explode’ text into basic elements – not a text blob I can move around but splines laser can understand and cut.
Clicking on text and using Explode function didn’t work at all. I searched the web, but found nothing! There were tips on how to do that in many other programs, or some other useless info. I finally found some release notes that announced new function in DS, ExplodeText. That was it! Why this is not what happens when you just “Explode” a text object, I do not know. But if you select a text object, and type: “ExplodeText”, it just works!
